The “Grupo Ceremonial Tunkul”, a ritual event designed to entertain and educate guests at Maroma Resort and Spa, presents music, poetry and dance as the sublimation of traditional aspects of the Mexican culture. The historical and philosophical value of these forms of art is precious as they provide an insight into the Mayan-Nahuatl view of the cosmos through the versatility and colours of recitation and bodily expressions.
These vehicles of artistic communication have a history of 15,000 years of bloom and, sadly, 500 years of oblivion. The performers of the "Grupo Ceremonial Tunkul" have made it their responsibility to revive a long forgotten language of magic gestures and mysterious words to raise consciousness of the great Pre-Colombian Mexican heritage.
Hand made musical instruments are also available to be purchased at the resort’s boutique after the ritual ceremony takes place.
Please read below for more information about the performance program
I. Purification ceremony (held in Nahuatl): the gods of the creation are invoked, as well as the jungle divinities and the lord of the sea
II. The conch (a wind instrument made from a sea shell) is blown towards the four corners of the universe and towards the sky where the supreme God, creator of life, resides
III. The music starts: tunkul (a traditional instrument) and drum rithms fill the air as well as perfumed copal smoke. The musicians intone a song to Huehueteotl "Old God", followed by prophetic dialogues of Chilam-balam (a Mayan religious text)
IV. The dance begins
V. Poetry is recited in Nahuatl
VI. A closing dance (Yuúm-chak) is performed to reach the climax of the ceremony
