To Machu Picchu by train

Due to a mandate issued by the Regional Government, PeruRail will not be allowed to offer bimodal services (bus + train) to transport passengers (visitors or residents) to Machu Picchu between April 1st and May 31st. This decision concerns all rail operators.

PeruRail will only provide train service between the region of Piscacucho to Machu Picchu town and return.

PeruRail assumed the responsibility of providing the whole travel experience between Cusco or Ollantaytambo to/from Piscacucho whilst guaranteeing punctual and safe operations and supporting the local travel agents’ activities.

Up to now, PeruRail assumed the costs related to the bus transfers which in effect did not impact clients’ travel budgets. Therefore, PeruRail rates from/to Ollantaytambo will remain the same.

Passengers with tickets to/from Ollantaytambo who wish to cancel their trips can claim a complete reimbursement (100%) from PeruRail providing the cancellation is put through 24hs prior to the date of travel.

The schedule of the bus service between Phiry (alter Ollantaytambo) and Piscacucho, is already established and the service will be handled by the local authorities, as follows:

Outbound                Inbound
04:30hs – 07:30hs   07:30hs – 09:00hs
09:30hs – 10:40hs   11:10hs – 13:00hs
13:30hs – 16:30hs   17:00hs – 17:30hs
18:00hs – 19:30hs   20:00hs – 23:30hs

The travellers should present themselves 30 minutes prior to the train departure.

From June 1st, PeruRail services will resume their normal course.

Initially train services will operate between Piscacucho, a station beyond Ollantaytambo, and Aguas Calientes, with a replacement bus service from Wanchaq Station in Cuzco bringing passengers by road to Piscacucho. The train journey will take 1 hour 20 minutes and the drive approximately 2 hours 30 minutes. It is estimated that it will be possible to make the entire journey from Poroy station in Cuzco to Machu Picchu by rail from July 2010, subject to favourable weather conditions.

PeruRail operates a Backpacker service and the luxury Hiram Bingham train between Cuzco and Machu Picchu. The Backpacker train will be resumed at the end of April and the Hiram Bingham will be back in operation at the end of June 2010.

Heavy rains at the end of January 2010 caused severe flooding in the Machu Picchu region leading to a series of landslides which severely damaged and eroded railway tracks between Cuzco, Ollantaytambo and Machu Picchu, the only means of vehicular access to the ancient Inca citadel.

Orient-Express operates in Peru six signature guest experiences: from exclusive hotels to stylish trips onboard our PeruRail trains.
